Journalist
Ulviyya Ali is an Azerbaijani independent journalist and human rights defender.
She was born on October 13, 1993, in Goychay and worked as a journalist for Voice of America from 2019 to 2025.
Since 2012, she has documented human rights violations in Azerbaijan through her reporting, social media posts, photos, and videos, which have been used as sources in international coverage of the country.
Ulviyya Ali was detained in May 2025 in connection with the “Meydan TV case,” amid a wider crackdown on independent media in Azerbaijan.
The Committee to Protect Journalists has described her as one of at least 25 leading journalists and media workers jailed in the country’s unprecedented crackdown on the independent press since late 2023.
In 2026, she received Free Press Unlimited’s “Most Resilient Journalist” award.
