On March 11, the next court session for the "Abzas Media case" was held. Journalists attended the session at the Baku Serious Crimes Court, presided over by Judge Rasim Sadikhov, after three previous hearings.
Sevinj Vagifgizi (Abbasova) and Elnara Gasimova gave their statements freely.
Later, the state prosecutor asked them questions, to which the journalists refused to answer. When the prosecutor asked Sevinj Vagifgizi, "Do you have a bank account abroad?" she responded, "Am I the president or his family that I would have a bank account or property abroad?"
Sevinj Vagifgizi noted that the investigation documents stated she was in the United States with Ülvi Həsənli and that they brought illegal financial assets from there. The journalist denied this: "I have never been to America with Ulvi Hasanli. You can verify this from customs records," she concluded.
Journalist Elnara Gasimova also refused to answer the prosecutor's questions. She stated that the investigation authorities fabricated documents: "In the case materials, notarial documents regarding real estate have been added to my section. The issue here is that one of the differences between the name in the documents, ‘Gasimova Elnara Bahaddin qızı,’ and mine is my father's name. The investigation authorities have unlawfully held me in detention for over a year, but they still haven't realized that my father's name is not ‘Bahaddin,’ but ‘Bahadar.’ From such an investigation authority, we do not expect a proper investigation, not even for the cases of ordinary citizens," Elnara Gasimova explained.
The next hearing is scheduled for April 1.
Since November 20, 2023, six employees of "Abzas Media," which conducts corruption investigations in Azerbaijan, have been imprisoned under the "Abzas Media case." These include Director Ulvi Hasanli, his deputy Mahammad Kekalov, Editor-in-Chief Sevinj Vagifgizi, reporters Nargiz Absalamova and Elnara Gasimova, investigative journalist Hafiz Babali, and last May, Farid Mehralizada journalist of "Azadlıq Radio" and economist.
All the journalists were initially charged with smuggling. In August last year, the charges against those arrested in the "Abzas Media case" were escalated. Given the additional charges brought by the investigation, the journalists are facing sentences ranging from 8 to 12 years in prison.
Local and international human rights organizations consider these arrests politically motivated and have called for the release of the journalists and the dismissal of the charges against them.
